<p class="story-body">Basic Education on Africa Programme (BEAP) a newly established project for Africa has now arrived in The Gambia, with UNESCO taking the lead in the implementation of the project. The Gambia, Rwanda and Ethiopia are choosen as pilot countries of the project.</p>
<p class="story-body">The project (BEAP) has identified three areas of immediate attention, namely; Education, Curriculum Policy and Framework, Entrepreneurship Education and Competencies and Skills Development.</p>
<p class="story-body">It was to this effect that UNESCO, together with The Gambia National Commission for UNESCO, organised a stakeholders conference at the Jerma Beach Hotel from 22nd &#8211; 23rd April, 2008, in order to define The Gambia&#8217;s framework under the Basic Education in Africa programme.</p>
<p>In her welcoming remarks, Sukai Bojang, Secretary General of The Gambia National Commission (NATCOM) said it is pleasing to know that The Gambia is the first pilot country for the Basic Education Africa Programme (BEAP)</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>HOUSTON,  April 25 (UPI) &#8212; <span id="intelliTXT">U.S. company Lockheed Martin and <a href="http://www.upi.com/International_Security/Industry/Briefing/2008/04/25/lm_rice_launch_lancer_research_project/3263/" target="_blank">Rice University</a> are joining forces to produce new security technologies.</span></p>
<p>The new partnership, which was announced Wednesday, will also pursue the development of innovative technologies in electronics and energy, Lockheed Martin said in a statement.</p>
<p>Lockheed Martin and Rice said they were launching what they called &#8220;an innovative, strategic partnership to develop new technologies for a broad range of applications in electronics, energy and security.</p></blockquote>
<p><a title="Opposing Waterway project" href="http://english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_national/284080.html" target="_blank">Civic groups launch signature campaign opposing waterway project</a></p>

<p align="justify">Civic groups nationwide on Thursday launched a campaign aimed at collecting ten million signatures opposing a controversial cross-country canal project.</p>
<p align="justify">
<p align="justify">The pan-South Korea waterway project proposed by President Lee Myung-bak remains hotly contested, with scholars and experts questioning its cost-efficiency and raising concerns over associated environmental risks.</p>
<p align="justify">
<p align="justify">President Lee, who has been in office since February, pledged during the election that he will push for the building of a cross-country canal. He said the 3,100-kilometer-long waterway network would cut the nation&#8217;s logistics costs by a third, promote balanced regional development, create thousands of jobs and boost tourism. The project would consist of 17 routes, including a 540-kilometer Seoul-Busan waterway, he said.</p>

<p align="justify">In a press communique, the civic groups called upon the community to back their campaign in order to force the government to stop the project.</p>
